Dark souls uchigatana

Can't equip Uchigatana! This is my first Souls game so go easy on me. I was told that the Uchigatana is a good weapon for early on, so I got that (after many attempts) and now I can't equip it, the "Use" option is greyed out. The stats for it aren't red anymore, my dexterity used to be too low but not anymore.
