I at first changed the clutch, pilot bearing, release bearing and pressure plate., A month or so later I tried to shift into 4th, and I got a gear grind. That was progress. I worked with it a while and got it to go into 4th. Today, I use it frequently with no problems. My interpretation of the problem was that the PO never used 4th/8th and the rails built up a fine layer of rust and debris that prevented shifting. pogobill., The hydraulic pump and PTO driveshaft is splined into a hub on the flywheel. When these splines fail it rarely makes noise. I would drain the fluid from the rear housing, then remove the hydraulic pump. Noise could be coming from something related to the PTO clutch and/or pump drive gears.
