Unlike the other of David's three elder sons, Amnon, Absalom ..., David's adultery and murder first led to one son's death shortly after his birth. Later, another son raped David's daughter Tamar; this led to his son Absalom instituting a coup. David attempted a smooth transition to the next king, Solomon, but the trouble in the family continued with Adonijah.
