I think you can get a brand new 3.3 for under $4000. I am in the middle of a Mercedes 5cyl turbo diesel swap. Not as much power but for me it was priced right at $100.

LOTS of cutting and fitting but maybe it's an easier fit in a Ranger. The exhaust is pretty simple - just a pipe out of the engine bay. The first section of the Mercedes pipe will make the exhaust work easier. Any radiator for a 5.0/Ranger swap should handle the cooling. Diesels are not generally hard to cool.
