It might be best to have your follower wait at Jorrvaskr if you try the 3rd method. Dupe the diamonds until there's a moderate pile of them, and you can leave them there, so they'll be waiting for you every time you come to Whiterun. As long as your follower is the one to pick them up. It's not that bad once you get a pile.
